Born in 1972, Valérie Graftieaux is graduated of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d’Art in Paris and of the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. His work has already been shown in numerous exhibitions in France, Germany and Quebec. She chose a demanding path, supported by institutional residencies abroad, and a network of private collectors.
Her photographic work as her drawing work consists of series. It is the dialogue and the comings and goings between the different pieces of the series that materialize the questioning.
The object (artifact or natural) generally inspires her, and allows her to access a spectrum of reflection. A network of links, connivances and extrapolations then takes place between the microcosm and the macrocosm, between the particular and the universal, between the image and the imaginary of the spectator.
There is a spirit of curiosity cabinet, the Wunderkammer of the seventeenth century : to understand the world from singular objects.
This is the detail, and the minimalist staging that characterize his work. A spirit that flirts with several fields : scientific photography, old photography and a plastic proximity to drawing or engraving.
However, it is undeniable that series after series, Valérie Graftieaux weaves a singular and timeless path where it is question of time and footprint and which questions our humanity, filigree.
