Mateescu Andrei

Andrei Mateescu est né en 1988 à Bucarest (Roumanie), où il a également étudié au Département d’Image Dynamique et de Photographie de l’Université Nationale des Arts, obtenant son BFA puis son MFA en 2012. Il a grandi dans une succession d’immeubles communistes, formant d’abord son œil et son imagination à travers ses premières expériences photographiques, faites à l’aide d’un appareil photo numérique bon marché. Compte tenu de l’environnement, il est facile de voir comment l’étude de la photographie a conduit organiquement à des investigations formelles sur le syncrétisme et les relations délicates qui articulent le tissu du paysage urbain actuel. Ces préoccupations se sont matérialisées pour la première fois par le projet collaboratif RO-Archive, dans lequel il a contribué avec une série sur le littoral touristique roumain – Olympus (2009-2011). Il n’a pas fallu longtemps pour qu’une préoccupation sous-jacente se soit manifestée dans sa série sur les limites du médium photographique et sa capacité à communiquer adéquatement avec les enjeux de la société contemporaine. Un exemple notable est la manière dont il aborde les complexités d’un paysage urbain éclectique et difficile d’Europe de l’Est dans ses séries photographiques Multilateral, HYPER et Residential. Par la suite, il a élargi et abordé des concepts et des thèmes similaires avec des approches post-photographiques semblables, donnant lieu à des projets comme gray (Gy), CC, Index, AM AM ou Like Water Under the Bridge. Il vit et travaille actuellement à Bucarest, en Roumanie.
