Born in 1952 in Iskander, former Kazakh territory, now Uzbekistan, lives and works in Shymkent, Kazakhstan
He is a founding member of the group Kyzyl Traktor (“Red Tractor”).
Video artistÂ graduated from the University of Arts in Tashkent (Uzbekistan), SmaÃ¯l Bayaliyev realizes the performence The bird Simurgh in the Sufi Mosque Hodja Akhmed Yassawi in Turkestan. In this historic place, Smail runs a huge book whose pages are made of Kazakh traditional wool carpet (the syrmaks). The artist is dressed in an asian tunic and carries a Soviet gas mask while the image of a flock of birds flying before a hawk superimposes. The juxtaposition of references and mount the image and sound refers to the loss of the sacred and unifying traditions.
