SHALVAK (Shalva Khakhanashvili), FRONTLINE…  GEORGIA ON MY MIND, 2022

Shalva Khakhanashvili left Georgia emerging from decades of Soviet authoritarianism, shortly after the proclamation of the independence in 1991. Later on, he has lived in Russia, Germany and now France. Once settled in Paris, he never lost the link with the East-European and Caucasian artistic networks.

Painter and photographer, curator and cultural operator, Shalvak is a tireless driver of artistic partnerships in Europe. In 1995 he was spotted by the gallerist Françoise Friedrich who exhibited his works many times and offered him a solo exhibition in Cologne in 1998. The same year, the art critic Anne Tronche introduced him in the exhibition “On the other side of the history” set up by Apollonia and presented in 1999 in Schiltigheim (Coopérative des Bouchers) and subsequently in Paris, Thessaloniki, and Rethymno.

As of today, it is an exhibition where the visitor is invited to discover the universe of the artist through three significant themes: the human, the urban and the relationship between painting and photography.
Shalvak compares his artistic work with the rock of Sisyphus, as he constantly starts over again his process of making images. He constructs, deconstructs and reconstructs reality, exploring questions such as identity, mobility, the city, the war…
